As part of our 10th birthday weekend celebrations, we have a range of activities on offer including this history talk from Tom Dunbabin

East Bay Neck – The Crossing Place

East Bay Neck was the name given to the narrow strip of land that connects Forestier & Tasman Peninsulas to the rest of Tasmania.

Once the strategic crossing place for Indigenous Tasmanians of the Oyster Bay Tribe on their winter journey from the eastern highlands it is now part of the journey for tourists en-route to Port Arthur.

Prominent in the view-scape from the Bangor Vineyard Shed the ‘Neck’s’ past followed the trajectory of Tasmania’s broader history from Indigenous occupation through European exploration, settlement as a British convict outstation, agricultural development and now major tourism destination.

Tom will touch on all the aspects of the Neck’s past with a particular focus on some little-known stories from the 19th century.
