Exploring Tasmania’s Underwater Wonders: The Tasman Wildlife Showcase at Bangor

This winter, Bangor Vineyard Shed invites you to dive beneath the surface and explore the wonders of Tasmania’s marine world at the Tasman Wildlife Showcase - a science-packed afternoon designed to inspire curiosity and celebrate our unique coastal ecosystems.

Held on Saturday 19th July, this special event brings together three of Tasmania’s leading marine scientists who will share captivating stories and stunning visuals from beneath the waves. It’s an afternoon for all ages - from science lovers and wildlife enthusiasts to anyone looking to better understand the marine world right on our doorstep.

Spotlight on the Red Handfish
Dr Jemina Stuart-Smith, marine ecologist at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), leads the conservation recovery program for the critically endangered red handfish, a quirky little fish known for “walking” along the seafloor on its fins. Once found in several places around Tasmania, red handfish populations are now so small that scientists have named individual fish to monitor them. Jemina will share updates on this remarkable conservation project and the urgent efforts underway to save this species from extinction.

Secrets of the Seafloor
Marine biologist Dr Karen Gowlett-Holmes is a name many will recognise in Tasmania’s diving and marine research communities. With over 35 years of experience and a collection of international photography awards, Karen is an expert in the incredible biodiversity found along the Tasman Peninsula’s coastline. Her talk will highlight the plight of Tasmania's Giant Kelp forests and and the work being undertaken to restore them.

Kelp Forests and Lobsters: A Delicate Balance
Associate Professor Scott Ling from IMAS will round out the afternoon with his research on the fragile balance between sea urchins, kelp forests, and rock lobsters. Scott’s work in North Bay, on the Tasman Peninsula, has revealed how unchecked sea urchin populations can devastate kelp forests - vital underwater habitats that support a host of marine life. Fortunately, Scott’s research also shows how maintaining strong populations of natural predators like rock lobsters can restore ecosystem balance and help our reefs thrive.

A Fun and Educational Afternoon for All
Alongside fascinating talks and Q&A, guests will enjoy a relaxed “meet the scientists” session over light snacks, with drinks and meals available to purchase. Whether you’re a budding young marine biologist, a lifelong ocean lover, or simply curious about Tasmania’s underwater world, the Tasman Wildlife Showcase offers a chance to engage directly with the science shaping conservation in our region.
